Part 3: Trauma Informed Schools Classroom Strategies, with Susan Craig

In 2017, ATN released an audio summit containing interviews of leading educators nationwide.  Julie Beem interviewed Dr. Susan Craig. Listen to Dr. Craig explain the specific challenges children with trauma histories struggle with during the middle school years. She provides specific strategies, from her book, Trauma Sensitive Schools – The Adolescent Years, for teachers working with children with trauma in the middle years. Dr. Craig addresses the importance of a  sense of safety and connection as the climate of the school, creating positive culture within peer groups, and the ways to structure the school to allow for more relationship building.

Her presentation is shared and broken down into 4 parts.

Part 3

In this section, Dr. Craig discusses what an educator can do when these children have pushed their buttons.  You can’t help a child who is out of control if you are out of control yourself! Dr. Craig says, “Remember that what is happening has nothing to do with you, but it has everything to do with what happened to the child.”
