In 2017, ATN released an audio summit containing interviews of leading educators nationwide. Melissa Sadin interviewed Dr. Mona Johnson. Dr. Johnson is the Director of Student Support at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington state. Dr. Johnson co-authored the book, The Heart of Learning and Teaching. This book has become a backbone of much of the trauma-informed school’s curriculum and policy being developed across the country today.
In part four, Dr. Johnson talks about how her research shows that educators and staff working in trauma-impacted schools rarely get the level of support and care they need. Recovery from trauma can be a long-term process. The understanding of basic brain
science ties it all together.
