In 2017, ATN released an audio summit containing interviews of leading educators nationwide. Melissa Sadin interviewed Dr. Mona Johnson. Dr. Johnson is the Director of Student Support at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington state. Dr. Johnson co-authored the book, The Heart of Learning and Teaching. This book has become a backbone of much of the trauma-informed school’s curriculum and policy being developed across the country today.
In part three of this series, Dr. Johnson discusses vicarious trauma and compassion fatigue. She defines compassion fatigue as “The weariness that comes from caring.” We need to make the effort to rejuvenate ourselves. Her book gives great examples of how to do this.
