In 2017, ATN released an audio summit containing interviews of leading educators nationwide. Melissa Sadin interviewed Dr. Mona Johnson. Dr. Johnson is the Director of Student Support at the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington state. Dr. Johnson co-authored the book, The Heart of Learning and Teaching. This book has become a backbone of much of the trauma-informed school’s curriculum and policy being developed across the country today.
In part one of this series, Dr. Johnson talks about how this book came about and why they made the rather unusual decision to place teacher self-care at the front of this book. She says, “It is really important to implement trauma informed practices and foster resilience in schools and communities.”
